BASIC GUIDELINES
The church wedding is a sacred rite invoking the blessing of God on the union of the bride and groom. Music adds dignity, reverence, and joy to your wedding liturgy. A wedding is an exchange of vows and an act of worship in which the bride, groom, family, and friends, come together to offer thanks and to ask God’s blessing. Such a moment in the life of the church has liturgical and musical requirements: sung texts must be sacred (drawn from or inspired by scripture), and instrumental music must fit the solemnity and action of the wedding liturgy. What follows is a brief description of the points at which the various liturgical music and Rite options occur within the wedding liturgy. The Together for Life Booklet will guide you through the wedding Rite and will present you with the various reading and Rite options available to you. The accompanying sheet gives you the options you can choose from for music. Some of the more commonly used pieces of music are presented and is not all inclusive, other sacred music/hymns may also be done. No popular music may be done within the liturgy.
Prelude: Prior to the beginning of the liturgy, there can prelude music consisting of approximately 10 minutes of music as guests arrive and are seated. Music for this time is usually selected at the discretion of the Director of Music. Appropriate instrumental/vocal music requests by the couple may also be done.
1. Processional: The processional is a festive piece played by the organ/piano alone or in combination with other instruments. A single piece is played for the entire procession.
2. Responsorial:Psalm: The responsorial psalm is sung after the first reading. You may choose from Psalms 33, 34, 103, 128, 145 (the psalms can be found in your Together for Life book.)
3. Presentation of Gifts: This takes very little time and so a short vocal/instrumental selection is most appropriate at this point.
4.Liturgy of the Eucharist:During a wedding mass the Eucharistic Acclamations: the Holy, Holy, the Memorial Acclamation, Great Amen, and Lamb of God are sung. Of note the Lord’s Prayer is a congregational prayer and therefore a solo is not permitted for this prayer. The sign of peace that follows is a part of the communion rite. Beginning with the Lord’s prayer, we seek union and reconciliation with the father and with one another. We then seek peace with one another before approaching the Lord's table (Matthew 5:23-25). It has become popular to also use this time to present flowers to the mothers. Keeping in mind the true meaning of this rite, a reconciliation, it is not appropriate place for a tribute to the mothers at this time.
5. Communion: In selecting music for communion you will want to keep in mind the Eucharistic nature of the rite as a sign of the community gathered together. A congregational hymn or vocal solo may be used.
6. Recessional: Like the processional a festive piece played by the organ/piano alone or in combination with other instruments.
NOTE: For those of you who will be celebrating your wedding within a Liturgy of the Word items 3-5 do not apply.
Musicians Fees
Within the wedding liturgy there are moments of sung prayer. Therefore, we require the presence of a cantor for all weddings. This person’s responsibilities include: song leader, proclaimer of the psalm, alleluia, mass parts and soloist for other musical requests.
Director of Music: $275.00. This fee covers all meetings and consultations with the couple to prepare the liturgy, as well as, any necessary rehearsals with the soloist and playing the wedding itself. This fee is reduced to $200.00 if you are not having a mass and will be married using the Rite of Marriage Outside of Mass.
Cantor: $175.00. We have a number of cantors that are available to sing at your wedding. The stated fee covers any necessary rehearsals and singing at the wedding itself. The fees for singers not associated with Holy Cross are variable and you will need to make the necessary arrangements regarding fees directly with them.
Guest Musicans:
Guest musicians are welcome at Holy Cross. They must have prior experience playing/singing at Catholic liturgies. Please inform the Director of Music at the time of your first meeting with Dr. Sandi if you will be having a guest musician(s). Outside musicians may only play/sing with prior approval and you must get approval of all music from the Director of Music to be done at your wedding liturgy. Should you choose to bring in a guest musician the Director of Music fee is reduced to $150.00 for all meetings, consultations and approval of music and musicians.
